My daughter schools had a parade of poetry today. All parents were invited. The notice went out last week to let the parents know and also the kids were very excited and chatting it up to parents also.
How it worked was we were out in the school yard and 1st KDG came out and did there poems as a group as did the 1st graders(that's my daughters class) After that each grade came out and the kids scattered and went to each parent and read there poems. It was like a free-for-all. The kids were so excited to read there poetry to the parents. So for 30 minutes or so grades 2-5 came out to us to read. I took my 4 year old and she loved it each time a student or two(some team work here) came to us to read.
Well my beef with this is the turnout from the parents.....there was 10-15 parents and that's it! Now each grade has about 50 kids..you do the math...and yes siblings I am sure. I know parents work and had prior engagements but I can name a few on the top of my head that don't work and I am sure out of those families someone could of came..it was open to grandparents too.
The kids were so excited to read out loud and outside for that. The smiles on there faces were priceless and the kids that did have parents there was even more precious.
I have noticed this over the years that parents just do not get involved in there kids educations as much as they should...but if it was sports of some kind I bet you they would have been there. I don't want to be judgemental but it makes me angry and sad. I became involved with the PTA and this year I am on the board and you know how many parents show up there....8 and 4 of them are on the board. The meeting is once a month and we switch times every other month from 4 pm to 7 pm so everyone can try to come to at least a few.
Now I want no gold medal or no Kudos but not only do I have one of the biggest families in the school I also work 4 days a week along with my DH 60 hour work week and he even shows up at stuff when he can.
All parents need to take an interest in the childs life and that includes there education....they are going to be our future leaders, voices and our providers when we are older. IO can ramble on and on but I bet most of you know where I am comming from......
